International Symposium Held on Major Countries’ Policies in Climate Change and Green Tech & Korea’s Opportunities The Green Technology Center (president Sung Chang-Mo) held the Green Technology Center International Symposium under the theme of “Korea’s opportunities in response to major countries” on November 12, Thursday at Somersetpalace in Jongno, Seoul. At the symposium, experts from the US, Germany and Japan presented on climate change and green technology policies, and major cases by different countries, and experts from academia and related organizations discussed on how Korea must respond to climate change policies of major countries. The symposium was divided into three sessions, chaired by Professor Kim Hee-Jip from SNU, Dr. Jang Jin-Gyu from the GTC and Professor Kang Sung-Jin from Korea University. In the first session, Dr. John Byrne from Delaware University delivered a presentation on Policies and Prospects of the US on Climate Change and Green Technology, covering the policies and major issues in climate change and green technology in the US and its ramification to Korea. What was notable was the analysis on differences and changes of US climate change response policies for the last 20 years. The second session consisted of the presentations on policy directions and prospects on climate change and green technology policies of Germany, Japan and Korea. Dr. Manfred Fischedick, who is vice-president of Wuppertal Institute in Germany, shared his expertise on overall climate change response policies of EU, best practices and experience of Germany in energy transition and response of Korea from the viewpoint of developed countries. What attracted participants’ attention the most was the analysis of climate change response policies by different regions (Munich, Frankfurt, Freiburg, etc), and how to achieve system innovations on a national level. Mr. Park Hwan-Il, head of the Policy Research Department of the GTC introduced overall green technology policies in Korea after 2008 and climate change response measures of Korea. The presentation was followed by the discussion together with panels from many countries on response measures of Korea. In particular, there was an analysis on major countries’ policies such as the US, China and EU, and response strategy of Korea, including technology transfer, global green R&D cooperation and green policy research system. The final presenter of the second session, Dr. Yarime Masaru from the Public Policy Graduate School of Tokyo University introduced diverse types of cooperation between Japan and major countries, INDC strategy of Japan, Japan’s efforts in reducing greenhouse gas, and green technology and climate change policies, together with many cases. In particular, detailed strategies for the INDC goals by the section, such as steel, chemical, paper manufacture garnered the attention of participants. In the third session on “Korea’s Opportunities – Globalization and Cooperation in Green Technology and Industry,” profound discussion among experts from the US, Germany, Japan and Korea was conducted on policies, current status and analysis on a global level. It was an opportunity to discuss the impact of changes in international policy landscape to Korea, following risks and opportunities, and cooperation scheme. The symposium spurred in-depth academic discussion among key experts in climate change and green technology in the US, Germany, Japan and Korea, and it was considered as a meaningful occasion where participants jointly discussed on sustainable climate change policies and green technology strategies.

GTC Held International Conference and Contest for Discussion and Cooperation on Climate Change among International Organizations and College/Graduate Students The Green Technology Center (led by president Sung Chang-Mo) under the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, held an international conference and contest under the title of “Best practices in international climate change & green response and their implications” on November 11, Wednesday at the Ninetree convention in Jongno, Seoul. At this conference, a number of practices of global green and climate change policies and businesses were shared and discussed by experts from government ministries, international organizations, government-funded organizations, such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Department of Climate Change Environment Diplomacy), GCF, GGGI, UNESCAP East Asia office UNDP Seoul Policy center, Science and Technology Policy Institute (Global Policy Research Center). In addition, during the contest, 25 teams from 20 undergraduate and graduate schools have presented their research paper and six teams were awarded among them. In particular, for the graduate school students league, the first prize was awarded to Yeo Han-Ik from KAIST Green Growth Graduate School who presented about “the Development of analysis package of Korean drone data”, and for the college student league, Ra Seon-Jung, Im Seo-Ra, Lee Min-Jae from Seoultech Architecture department who presented “the Green remodeling of old school building using ICT technology" won the first prize. President Sung Chang-Mo of the Green Technology Center Korea said, “This international conference helped us share successful achievements of the GTC in global businesses as we are reaching closer to the Post-2020 regime, and strengthen cooperation among the GTC and related international organizations, government-funded institutes, undergraduate and graduate schools.”

Green Technology Center presides over "energy" session of World Science & Technology Forum On Oct. 19th, Green Technology Center (GTC, President Sung Chang-mo) presided over the "energy" session in the World Science & Technology Forum of the "OECD Ministerial Meeting Daejeon 2015" held at Daejeon Convention Center. The World Science & Technology Forum, which was held under the theme "Creating our common future through science, technology and innovation," was hosted to discuss the future direction of scientific development to lay the ground for discussion in the OECD Ministerial Meeting. The energy session, which was co-organized by GTC and Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER, President Lee Ki-woo), was chaired by GTC President Sung Chang-mo and proceeded with under the theme "Next Generation Energy R&D Strategy." In his remarks, President Sung stated the purpose of the session, saying that "as innovation in science and technology plays a key role in boosting economic, environmental, and social sustainability, the session would serve as a great opportunity to think about the future of the renewable energy industry." The first speaker of the session was Associate Laboratory Director Brian Hennegan of the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) who gave a presentation on the "Development of renewable energy technologies in the U.S." Presenting the plan of the U.S. Department of Energy and opportunities on global cooperation, he stated that "the U.S. Department of Energy and affiliated national research institutions proposed a new plan on modernizing the electricity grid to address challenges together with the private sector and academia." The second speaker, Professor Detlef Stolten of Germany's RWTH Aachen University, gave a presentation titled "Hydrogen as an enabler for a Cleaner World." He said that "reducing carbon emission by 80% until 2050 may undermine efficiency, which could be complemented by making good use of hydrogen," and that "using hydrogen for automotive fuel is more cost efficient than introducing gas grid or shifting to electricity." The third speaker Professor Lee Sang-yeop of KAIST made a presentation on the "Biorefineries for energy, chemicals and materials." In his presentation, he said that "morally sound microorganism could be used as raw material instead of renewable food" and that "various chemical substances and materials could be produced through the use of biomass." He added that "bio-refinery is expected become an essential platform that would allow us to take one step closer to building a sustainable biochemical industry in the near future." GTC stated that it hopes "the session serves as an opportunity to facilitate public-private partnership and global cooperation on renewable energy, one of the top three sources of electricity in 2030."

Green Technology Center discusses KIGAM-SMI-GTC Collaborative Research On Oct. 13th, Green Technology Center (GTC, President Sung Chang-mo) took part in the ‘KIGAM-Delegation of Australia Meeting’ held at the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) to have discussions on the collaborative research carried out by KIGAM, SMI (Sustainable Minerals Institute), and GTC. SMI's visit to Korea is a part of the follow-up measure to the MOU signed between the Mineral Utilization Convergence Research Center of the Mineral Resource Research Division in KIGAM and SMI, an affiliate of the University of Queensland in Australia. The purpose of the visit, which follows the collaborative research meeting co-hosted by KIGAM, GTC, and SMI during the visit to Australia in May, was to share the accomplishments made in the transfer of green cement technology developed by Dr. Ahn Ji-hwan of KIGAM and to discuss ways to utilize the technology as well as its future development direction. The Korea-Australia Joint Workshop on Future Collaborative Activity was joined by Senior Geologist Brad John and his team from Geological Survey of Queensland at the Department of Natural Resources and Mining of the Queensland State Government, visitors from the University of Queensland, President Kim Kyu-han of KIGAM, President Sung Chang-mo of GTC, and Kwon Jeong-hui, an official from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia. The workshop began at 10 a.m. with the exchange of greetings by each delegation. After watching the promotional video of KIGAM and GTC, institutions gave presentations on their collaborative research and engaged in discussions. KIGAM President Kim Kyu-han stated that "the meeting was an important step for making progress in our collaborative research and technology transfer with Australia, as well as a meaningful occasion where KiGAM and the Queensland State Government of Australia shared technologies and discussed know-how in utilizing natural resources." He especially thanked GTC President Sung Chang-mo for "playing a critical role as a bridge between institutions in the collaborative project on technology transfer between Korea and Australia." In closing, each institution committed to continuously make progress in their collaborative research through mutual exchange and successfully ended the workshop.

GTC to Successfully host ‘2015 Green Technology Conference and Technology Fair’ ‘2015 Green Technology Conference and Technology Fair’, co-hosted by Seoul Business Agency, Green Technology Center and Etnews, was successfully organized in Ninetree Convention Center at Gwanghwamoon. This event encompasses various events to strengthen partnership between Korea and China in promoting green technology industry and creative economy through conference, technology fair, consultation for Chinese business partners and exhibition of green products. This conference also held panel discussion and presentation under the four key agenda including 1) the status quo of green technology, 2) prospect on game-changing and promising technology and market, 3) strategies to enter emerging markets and 4) ways and sectors to strengthen partnership in Chinese market. During the Green Technology Fair, more than 20 companies presented various green technologies and excellence of technologies especially in “energy efficiency” and “environmental pollution reduction”. Furthermore, export consultation targeting Chinese business partners with keen interests in Korean green technology industry was also held in order to explore ways to attract more foreign capital and enter foreign markets by selecting promising green technology companies. More than 300 participants encompassing small and medium sized entrepreneurs, industries and domestic experts participated to gather more information on green technology, attract investment and explore new market in this event.

“Green INFOLAB” - an open space to create new opportunities for the green technology SMEs On 14th September, Green Technology Center Korea (GTC) and Seoul Business Agency (SBA) opened “Green INFOLAB”, in 17th floor, Namsan Square Building, Jung-gu. Green INFOLAB is an open space for small and medium sized enterprises in green technology field. At the opening ceremony, where green technology SMEs and Green INFOLAB concerned parties have attended, speeches on celebration of Green INFOLAB and expectations of SMES for Green INFOLAB were presented. Green INFOLAB has 5 visions; 1) Contribute to the creative economy paradigm, 2) Establish industrial ecosystem for mutual benefit of both large and small business, 3) Encourage SMEs entering overseas green market, 4) Create information hub of green technology, green market, and green policies, and 5) Respond to climate change and energy issues. Based on these, Green INFOLAB plans to provide an ongoing support to strengthen competitiveness and capabilities of SMEs in green technology field.

The International Conference on Science & Technology Innovation and Development - ‘GTC-KEI joint session’ On September 10th, the Green Technology Centre (GTC) and the Korean Environmental Policy and Evaluation Research Institute (KEI) organized the joint session of the first International Conference on Science & Technology Innovation and Development at the Sheraton Seoul D-Cube City. This session was conducted among green technology experts who gathered to seek ways to bridge the gap between technological innovation and development cooperation. With “Green Technology for Climate Change Response in Developing Countries” as the main topic of the session, the GTC’s International Strategy Officer, Kim Hyung Joo, introduced the roles and activities of the GTC under the technological and financial mechanism of UN agencies and the UNFCCC and also its multilateral governance system of international cooperation through a presentation on the GTC’s ‘Global Green Development Cooperation Model and Implementation Status’. In addition, the progress status and related outcomes of the Green Island demonstration projects (Philippines Bantayan Island’s CCUS project, WTE project in the Dominican Republic and so on) which are currently ongoing, were also presented. Each participant presented their comments regarding different topics eg: the Global Green Growth Agency (GGGI) on ‘developing green technology diffusion strategy’, Kyonghee University on ‘Germany’s Climate change technology international cooperation and technology transfer mechanisms’, and the KEI on ‘climate change adaptation technology for developing countries in the Asia Pacific’. In addition, through discussion and a Q&A session, different know-how and individual country’s experiences on green technology international business as well as comments on close cooperation and development of developing countries were broadly exchanged.

2015 Future Energy Forum ○ Date : 18 June 2015 ○ Venue : Nine Tree Convention Gwanghwamun, Seoul, Korea The President of Green Technology Center, Sung Chang-mo participated in the "Future Energy Forum 2015" under the theme of "New strategies for energy in the era of climate changes" hosted by Chosunbiz, an economic analyst media. He especially highlighted the significance of green economy in the forum. In the second session of the forum, the GTC President Sung Chang-mo presented on "The prospect and strategies of green industry in China" during the discussion. He said "Among the seven plans to develop new strategic industries that the Chinese government announced in 2010, four of them are closely related to the green economy." "China is planning to take a dominant role in green economy paradigm in the international society by associating the concept of ODA and green industry products." he added. He further emphasized that "Since the green industry is a new growth engine for China, it is expected that the Chinese government will take a lead to proceed with green development reform." In the following session, the discussion continued on the question of "Where does Korea stand when China aims to become the world's top green industry country?" The president Sung answered "Korea initially introduced the idea of green economy. China has simply benchmarked the existing model in Korea." He also added "As two countries have similar strategy for growth and China comparatively has higher growth potential in green industry, Korea should take more strategic approach." Additionally he further stated that "the construction of the Silk Road in China will be the essential source of capital for the AIIB." "In order for Korea to take a pioneering position in green growth between China and AIIB, more preparation is definitely required." he added.
