Green Technology Center presides over "energy" session of World Science & Technology Forum

On Oct. 19th, Green Technology Center (GTC, President Sung Chang-mo) presided over the "energy" session in the World Science & Technology Forum of the "OECD Ministerial Meeting Daejeon 2015" held at Daejeon Convention Center.

The World Science & Technology Forum, which was held under the theme "Creating our common future through science, technology and innovation," was hosted to discuss the future direction of scientific development to lay the ground for discussion in the OECD Ministerial Meeting.

The energy session, which was co-organized by GTC and Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER, President Lee Ki-woo), was chaired by GTC President Sung Chang-mo and proceeded with under the theme "Next Generation Energy R&D Strategy."

In his remarks, President Sung stated the purpose of the session, saying that "as innovation in science and technology plays a key role in boosting economic, environmental, and social sustainability, the session would serve as a great opportunity to think about the future of the renewable energy industry."

The first speaker of the session was Associate Laboratory Director Brian Hennegan of the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) who gave a presentation on the "Development of renewable energy technologies in the U.S." Presenting the plan of the U.S. Department of Energy and opportunities on global cooperation, he stated that "the U.S. Department of Energy and affiliated national research institutions proposed a new plan on modernizing the electricity grid to address challenges together with the private sector and academia."

The second speaker, Professor Detlef Stolten of Germany's RWTH Aachen University, gave a presentation titled "Hydrogen as an enabler for a Cleaner World." He said that "reducing carbon emission by 80% until 2050 may undermine efficiency, which could be complemented by making good use of hydrogen," and that "using hydrogen for automotive fuel is more cost efficient than introducing gas grid or shifting to electricity."

The third speaker Professor Lee Sang-yeop of KAIST made a presentation on the "Biorefineries for energy, chemicals and materials." In his presentation, he said that "morally sound microorganism could be used as raw material instead of renewable food" and that "various chemical substances and materials could be produced through the use of biomass." He added that "bio-refinery is expected become an essential platform that would allow us to take one step closer to building a sustainable biochemical industry in the near future."

GTC stated that it hopes "the session serves as an opportunity to facilitate public-private partnership and global cooperation on renewable energy, one of the top three sources of electricity in 2030."
