The Green Technology Center (GTC) introduced future green technologies on March 21 at the symposium for the 4th International Day of Forests hosted by the Korea Forest Service and organized by the Korean Forest Society.

The symposium held under the theme of “The Forest and Water” was conducted to discuss the role and value of a pure water supply to forests, and to seek a Post-2020 climate change adaptation strategy for the forest sector.

In his keynote lecture, Jae-chul Choi, Ambassador for Climate Change in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs introduced the aims and contents of the Paris Agreement. In the first session, presentations were given on the following:
▲ “Forest management plan for the sustainable securement of pure water resources,” by JooHoon Im, Section Chief of the National Institute of Forest Science, and ▲ “The importance of water management in forest and water resources,” by SeungWu Park, Honorary Professor at Seoul National University.

In the second session, presentations were given as follows:

▲ “2030 forest and carbon management strategy,” by Lee Mi Ra, Director of Forest Policy Division in the Korea Forest Service, and ▲ “Future green technology for climate change adaptation,” by Ho-Sik Chon, Senior Researcher at the Green Technology Center.

In particular, GTC Senior Researcher Chon presented on “nine future green technologies which can effectively reduce risk of increasing natural disasters (typhoon, heavy rains, landslides, and heat waves) induced by climate change,” emphasizing the importance placed upon green technology in the Paris Agreement.

Dr. Chon also expressed his opinion: “Developing technology and understanding the effects of climate change should be accompanied by the preparation of a national strategy for addressing the crisis of climate change.”

The UN has proclaimed March 21 as the International Day of Forests, urging all governments to promote the forests` value.
