The ‘Center for Climate Technology Cooperation’ for technical cooperation on climate change mitigation and adaptation was established by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) in the Green Technology Center-Korea (GTC) in early 2016.

The center visited Bhutan from 19-23 January to discuss the introduction and transfer of climate change mitigation and adaptation technologies.

At a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Yeshi Dorji on the first day, GTC President Changmo Sung and research staff ascertained the possibility of technical cooperation between Korea and Bhutan, including on both microgrid convergence policy and on “Smart Farms” in the agricultural field.

On the second day, Bhutanese Minister for Information and Communications D. N. Dhungyel and others explained that the Government is forging ahead to introduce electric vehicles with the aim of reducing both greenhouse gas emissions and the need for expensive fossil fuel imports. The GTC proposed possible differentiated cooperation in the short, medium, and long term to collaborate with Bhutan on electric vehicles as follows:

  - Short term: Promote Capacity Building of Bhutanese Government
  - Short term: Develop a Master Plan to establish policy and infrastructure on the introduction of electric vehicles
  - Mid/long term: Support infrastructure construction of electric vehicles by hosting an international organization in Bhutan and encouraging private investment

On the third day, Prime Minister Jigme Tinley said that his government wishes to introduce electric vehicles to Bhutan to develop a sustainable national economy,  and will fully support demonstration projects using Korean advanced electric vehicle technologies in Bhutan.
